In 1980 Bowie took to treading the boards in Bernard Pomerance's 'The Elephant Man'. This was Bowies first starring role in a major stage production. Playing the part of 'The Elephant Man', the Victorian John Merrick,he won critical acclaim when the show hit Broadway.
It has been claimed that Bowie suffered longterm problems from contorting his body to give a more authentic performance of John Merrick. Whether that is true or not is open to debate but he certainly put his body through the mill delivering the part.
Unfortunately videos of this performance are few but you can see clips which have been included in inteviews and documetaries on David Bowie. There is an excellent page HERE on 'Bowie golden Years' website where I got some information on.
Along with the outstanding 'Blackstar' album the play 'Lazarus' was the final farewell present David Bowie left for us fans.

"After dazzling in Hedwig & The Angry Inch last year, Golden Globe winner Michael C. Hall returns to the stage in yet another marquee production. Playing at the New York Theatre Workshop, Lazarus is co-written by the dearly departed musical icon David Bowie and Tony-winner Enda Walsh (Once), and includes both re-worked material from Bowie's iconic catalogue alongside brand new music. Director Ivo van Hove (A View from the Bridge) has said that the new compositions sound like "classics".
Lazarus is based on the classic sci-fi novel The Man Who Fell to Earth by Walter Tevis. Bowie himself played the lead role in Nicolas Roeg's 1976 movie adaptation, starring as a hollow-eyed humanoid alien (this was during Bowie's Thin White Duke phase) who comes to the earth in search of water for his draught-ridden home planet".
